The Original Base Chapel

The original base chapel, colloquially termed 'Chapel Two', was built between 1956 - 1957 and was a beautifully ornate building, set in very pretty gardens and situated close to the main base gate. This chapel was used by all faiths, until the much larger Chapel One was built, when it then became home to mainly the Lutherians and Christian Scientists.

Prior to the building of Chapel One, the various congregations would work on a rota basis, sharing the smaller chapel at different times throughout the day, especially on Sundays when services would be timetabled for each religious denomination1.

Chapel One

Chapel One was built in the 60’s and was much larger than the original chapel. It was situated opposite the Sergeants Club. The chapel was used mainly by christian denominations, and was said to have a healthy robust congregation, consisting of families and singles. This chapel contained the ‘Lady Be Good’ stained glass window, which was in commemoration of the B-24 bomber, which crash landed, with the loss of all 7 crew. The original window is now on display in the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Wright-Patterson AFB, Green County, Ohio2.
