ARMED FORCES DAY Celebrations

"It is fitting and proper that we devote one day each year to paying special tribute to those whose constancy and courage constitute one of the bulwarks guarding the freedom of this nation and the peace of the free world."

 President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953

On Armed Forces Day, which was always the second Saturday in May, the base was open to the public. The event was attended by many of the locals and began with an air force parade of the various squadrons, all of which were accompanied by a military band. This could be viewed from a standing position or seated in the bleachers, which were erected alongside the runway This was usually followed by speeches from the base commander and local dignitaries such as the U.S ambassador to Libya.

Aircraft were available for viewing and inspection and there were also colourful air displays and maneuvers. The event was always abundant in refreshment stands, offering cold drinks and snacks to the many spectators who enjoyed the military display.
