“Fond memories. Stationed Wheelus Jan. 65- June 66, Supply SQ. POL Refueled F-105s & F-4Cs of the 36th & 49th, out of Germany.. My Dad came TDY, from Torrejon AB, Spain 401st TFW, F-100s. Dad was on the 3rd floor, of my barracks, after a short stay at Tiger Town, with the scorpions & spiders I was on the 2nd.floor. We got to spend some time together, before I rotated back home, to Charleston AFB. We got to eat chow together, and he spent a lot of time in my room, as I had the only A/C unit in the whole barracks. We talked about Mom, who was at home with our Yorkie Dogs, in Florida, she wrote us every day.”

“I was stationed in Wheelus AFB in the Army Aviation for about a year from 1963-64, before my discharge. I enjoyed my tour, visiting ruins at Magna Carta, Italy on the hop as well as the city of Tripoli (old and new).
Had a chance to visit an Italian and Libiyan tomato farms with Sgt Yamaguchi. Rented and rode bicycles out the East Gate to the countryside.
Wheelus was a nice base with lots of things to do... All of the guys from Hawaii would get together at the Base Laundry Managers home off base for a cookout, maybe once a month on a Sunday.
I remember that the Aviation section built a powered raft using salvaged tip tanks, a small engine and a drive shaft with a prop, put together by Specialist Hernandez. We did some diving in the Mediterranean.
My Army tour was only 3 years, but I got to see and enjoy a lot of places.”

“I visited Wheeler AFB with two dependents as I drove across North Africa in Feb 1965. We were welcomed
to all the benefits for our one night and day layover. Showers, hamburgers, and beer. The entire party was four young men, college age, on our way to Egypt before the Russians were to flood the artifacts by way of Aswan dam.
The Memory of an American lifestyle in the middle of the sand will be part of my memoir.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my feelings of gratitude in a time of great suffering caused by the collapse of two dams. May the departed pass safely.”

“My family lived on base from 1959-1962, my father was Club Officer of the Officers Club, then he was the Commissary Officer, finally ended being Officer in charge of Materials. He was very active in the Protestant Men of the Chapel ----- he was on the committee that designed the Lady Be Good Stain glass window at the Chapel --- which is now housed at the Air Force museum at Wright Patterson AFB. We were there during the Congo uprising - my mother was very involved with gathering clothing for the refuges being transported back to Europe.
This exhibit brought back so many memories of my child-hood there. Currently, my husband and I are going through all of my father's slides of Sabratha and Leptis Magna -------
I was looking up some information on distances between Tripoli, Sabratha and Leptis and bumped into your website.
I have a vague memory of meeting the Queen when she was on base once. My best memories are being able to walk one block to the beach - one of the most outstanding memories is having to walk home from school in a locust swarm!”

“I was with a band from Australia but working in UK and Europe for six years as The Gibsons. We worked Wheelus Air base 30 Jan - 5 Feb 1967. Had a great time there. It was when the Super Sabres and F104's were flying. Our shows were really well received and the hospitality wonderful. My wife and I are still in contact with two of the band as the drummer has passed. My Dad was a Rat of Tobruk and was in Tripoli for a time. We have fond memories of our short time in Tripoli and a big thankyou to all who made us so welcome.

“Having worked at the Mocambo Night Club where many of your servicemen came and we (the girls in our English troop) were invited to Wheelus to perform our routines, it was a very exciting time for us 17/18 year olds... and an eye opener to the shops etc. Some of our girls became engaged to young servicemen but unfortunately have lost contact with them over the decades. This period was in the mid 60's when service personnel were on R&R from Vietnam. Some great memories thank you for your service.”
